Growing up in Kansas, I took pride in the Kansas state motto “Ad Astra Per Aspera” or “To the stars, through great difficulties”. Originally reflecting Kansas’s turbulent history, I interpret the motto as a reminder that we have the power to overcome barriers on the path to success.
Ad Astra Triathlon’s philosophy is to give team members their best possible chance of achieving their goals in triathlon, no matter what obstacles lay in the path. Whether this is preparing Rising Stars for their first triathlon, coaching individuals participating in triathlon in pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, or working with competitors looking to achieve at a top level, Ad Astra Triathlon is committed to providing excellent coaching and a welcoming, inclusive community to all, regardless of athletic ability, previous experience, or training commitment.
Tim Bontrager started doing triathlons as a way to stay healthy and socialize during graduate school. Starting with a mountain bike and barely being able to run a mile without taking breaks, he raced as a solidly average athlete with the University of Minnesota team before graduating and becoming self-coached. After graduation, he set a goal of competing at a higher level. He qualified to that U.S. Age Group National Team in 2019, and 2021, before racing in Japan for the 2022 season. Recently, he requalified to the national team in 2023 at the Olympic and Sprint distances. He has competed at all distances of triathlon from super-sprint up to full-ironman, with Olympic distances being his favorite. He was named a member of "Team Minnesota" in 2021, and was named as a "Minnesota Performance Setter" in 2023.
Tim's interest in coaching began in 2019 when he was asked for advice at work and within his family. After guiding several family members to success in their first 10k, he started working with friends ahead of their first triathlon. His friends successfully completed their first races at the YWCA Women's Triathlon in 2019, and the Lake Nojiri Triathlon in 2022. Tim enjoys coaching, and decided to found Ad Astra Triathlon as an opportunity to help other individuals in the Twin Cities area to meet their triathlon goals.
